HST on Fuel
I'm confused if I can claim ITC for HST paid on gasoline. Also if I can claim it is it 13%? (I am in Ontario). I also charge gas to the company credit card sometimes if the trip is purely business plus I keep my gas receipts and track mileage on my car which my accountant figures out at year end. If I can claim the HST as an ITC can I claim it on the gas I personally pay out of pocket for business related trips?

RE: HST on Fuel
Business HST Registrants collect the GST/HST on most of their sales and pay the GST/HST on most purchases they make to operate their business. They can claim an input tax credit, to recover the GST/HST paid or payable on the purchases they use in their commercial activities.

You should be able to legitimately claim the ITC on the business portion of expenses paid in relation to your commercial activities.

You can find more information about how the HST/GST works on http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/g...w-eng.html

RE: HST on Fuel
Thank you for the reply. My confusion is not whether I can claim it but how does it apply to fuel. Is it 13% HST that I can claim on the fuel for business?

For gas or fuel bills, the ITC is not 13/113 x the total bill, because gas bills include federal and provincial excise taxes not subject to HST I believe, however, each gas bill will itemize the exact HST paid by you.

If you personally incur fuel expenses on behalf of your business, then your company, if registered for HST, can claim the ITC on the reimbursement paid to you.

OTOH, if you are an employee, and incur out-of-pocket fuel expenses on behalf of your employer, and aren't reimbursed, you can file form GST370 for a rebate of the allowable ITC on HST paid, with your personal tax return. Most tax software will integrate the employment expense T777 form with the GST370 form.
